Lieutenant Colonel Blachford
The Autograph Books
This photograph was found in the Glenside Museum Archives, together with a letter from the son of one of the survivors.
‘I am afraid that I do not know much about it, but I will tell you what I know. My father, fourth from the right in the front row. The one unfortunately that is somewhat scratched. He was 12787 Private J Clement of the 2nd Battalion Royal Scots Fusiliers. The SS Donegal was a hospital ship returning from France with wounded troops. I believe from Boulogne to Southampton, when she was torpedoed by a German U-boat. The survivors were picked up by another ship, which was sailing for Avonmouth which was why the survivors came to Glenside.’
