'Bring Turner Home'

An ambitious campaign by Bristol Museum & Art Gallery
One painting.
One City.
One Week.
As a local partner organisation, Glenside Hospital Museum is sharing Bristol Museum & Art Gallery's 'Bring Turner Home' campaign. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the city to acquire one of JMW Turner’s earliest works, ‘The Rising Squall, Hot Wells from St Vincent’s Rock, Bristol’.
Painted when he was just 17 years old, it has been recently rediscovered in Tasmania after more than 150 years out of public view. It is due to go to auction at Sotheby’s on 2nd July 2025, with a guide price of £300k.
It is believed to be the only oil painting the artist did of Bristol and the iconic artwork shows the Avon Gorge before the construction of the Clifton Suspension Bridge.
This is the most ambitious campaign Bristol Museum & Art Gallery has ever launched, but they truly believe this painting belongs in the city. If successful, the painting will join the collection at Bristol Museum & Art Gallery, where it will be freely accessible to the public and serve as a focal point for education, storytelling, and civic pride. Bristol Museum & Art Gallery is the only public body bidding for it.
The ‘Bring Turner Home’ appeal is asking the public to help raise £100k towards the bid. No council funds will be used.
If unsuccessful, all donations made through the Crowdfunder will be returned.
Regardless of whether you can make a donation, you can help by sharing this page on social media using the campaign hashtag #BringTurnerHome.
