About Denis Reed
(ARCA, RWA) 1917-1979
The artist within Glenside - a talented painter with a turbulent Life
Glenside Hospital Museum has a collection of around 80 drawings and sketches by Denis Reed. Denis was a talented and ambitious graduate from the Royal College of Art.
He was a patient at Glenside Hospital in the 1950’s and suffered from bouts of severe depression. His drawings are beautifully executed and provide us with a poignant and moving account of life in the hospital.
These remarkable artworks provide a unique glimpse into life at the hospital during that era, more of which can be found in our blog post on Denis Reed.

"If you have never been to Glenside Hospital Museum, it is a wonderful museum. It is not gloomy or depressing but fascinating and hopeful. A really progressive institution."

"A fabulous history of the area, the hospitals, and of approaches to mental health and learning disabilities. An amazing array of artefacts, surgical instruments and ephemera. The staff were really welcoming and knowledgeable. Absolutely loved it!"
